The biggest disappointment in my life so far, is when Killy closed it's doors in 1997! But at least I got to experience 18 wonderful months before it did. The best years of my school life & the only period of schooling I've ever enjoyed. Very happy to see that it's opened it's doors once again & I wish all involved the very best. Good on ya Kilquhanity! Tom

It's wonderful to see a third alternative education school in the UK emerge as a going concern. May the school go from strength to strength. If I can help in any way, get in touch!

So glad that you have opened the school again and you are obviously working at something you truely believe in. The web site is great. I do hope that you are happy and enjoying life. All the best. P. S. Jim is still trying to avoid work as much as possible.

Brilliant news!
I am so glad to hear that Kilquhanity has re-opened. I was a student at Killy between '92 and '95 and absolutely loved my time there. Like so many people have commented here, my time at Killy was one of the best experiences of my life - wonderful, vibrant, exciting, creative, supportive, liberating, unique!
I have such beautiful memories from Killy and met so many special people there, I am so pleased that a new generation of students will be able to experience the wonders of Kilquhanity.
I would love to come and visit......and re-connect with some old friends too :-) Hi Ischtar! xxx

Hi everyone,
Me and my brother were students at Kilquhanity from 91 - 95 and my mother Zia/Joan whiteford taught sport and gymnastics there for a slightly longer period.
I am so happy and excited to see the school back up and running, my experience at the school was one of the best times of my life. I am currently at university studying to become a Drama teacher. I intend to work in a similar type of school as kilquhanity when I have qualified, so if you need any more hands on deck , just let me know, I would love to help out.
My mother and I intend to visit this summer.

Dear all involved in this brilliant project: I was a pupil from 84-89, started at 12yrs old as a weekly boarder....and what a beautiful part of my life! John and Morag still inspire me every day as I enjoy bringing up my 12 yr old and 6yr old boys. Quite tempted to bring the family up to Galloway ...Good luck. Lots of love, Aaron

My Grandfather was, I believe, born in Kilquhanity House back in 1895 and it passed out of the family shortly afterwards. I have visited the site twice - once when it was a school in the early 80's and again in the spring of 2008, when it appeared deserted. It is good to see that new life has been injected into the house and I wish the new project well for the future.

Just a quick thank you to all those who have posted comments and message in recent weeks. It is great to hear positive memories and notes of faith in what we are trying, now, to achieve. As we enter quietr months over the winter I hope more 'old friends' and new ones too, will post a message to share and enjoy. I am ever hopeful that as we approach 2010 the schools 70th year we will be able to organise some sort of gathering and festival to enjoy and commemorate and look to the future.

I miss Killy more than anywhere else in the world, my three years teaching there were the best of my life.
I hope that Killy goes from strength to strength and teaches the world of education as much as it taught me.
Hello to all my old friends, one day, perhaps, we'll meet again

When I think of John and Morag I think of people who were totally committed to and open towards children in an immediate way. Gav too. They inspire the way I approach teaching. It was great to see you a couple of years ago Gav. Good luck!

I attended Kilquhanity from 1977 to 1983 - without doubt, the best part of any childhood I could have hoped for. It has its own special place in my heart. I was saddened by the closing of Killy as a school in 1997 and then the passing of John and Morag themselves. The prospect of all that had been achieved by the school being lost to future generations was not a happy one - surely something could be done before its memory faded to far to be revived. Thank goodness it was, and well done to those who knuckled down and did it.
What John and Morag, not to mention everyone who worked with them and after them (staff and kids alike), created at Killy remains as relevant today as ever it was. It's so heartening to see it taking on its own life once more. I keep meaning to find the time to come and visit - I will soon, I promise.

I'm so glad that Kilquhanity is back on the map. Arguably, the need for the Kilquhanity and Summerhill models has never been more acute.
From 1954 - 58 I was a pupil at New Sherwood School in Epsom, Surrey. It was founded by John and Irma Wood, both ex-Kilquhanity teachers so links between the two schools were strong.
Live long and prosper!

Hi at Killy. How very nice to find out that life at Killy is still going on. Sitting in Denmark, having been a teacher and houseparent in 89 -90, having met Shi.... in Denmark in 01- 02 ish, having visited Killy, and John and Morag in 1997; there is still Killy blood running in Denmark.
Love to especially Val, Gavin, Akiko, Mary and all the others I know from way back when.
